Christian Heidel, the chief of Schalke 04, has admitted that his club was “lucky” to be able to sign Nabil Bentaleb on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Fennec Foxes player joined the Bundesliga club on a season-long loan near the end of the transfer window, with an option to be signed outright at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

Heidel admitted that Schalke were fortunate to land a player of the North African’s quality, explaining that Tottenham wanted a high price for him but were unwilling to sell within England – this led to the compromise of a loan to Germany.

“In Bentaleb we were lucky. There’d been countless offers for him, coming to tens of millions – in English pounds,” Heidel told German media over the weekend.

“It was our luck that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was afraid to sell him within England. What he wanted, however, was a fee as if we were English.

“In the end, we were able to arrange a loan deal.”
