FC Zurich striker Assan Ceesay says he will never forget the elation of scoring the goal that secured Africa Cup of Nations qualification for the Gambia.

The Scorpions secured a first-ever ticket to the AFCON last month when they defeated Angola 1-0 in Bakau in their penultimate Group D match, with Ceesay netting just past the hour mark.

The 27-year-old is set to be key man for Tom Saintfiet’s team when they head to Cameroon for the continental tournament early next year.

“This image [of him scoring the goal] any time I looked at it, it’s like I scored the goal right now because is a feeling that will stay with me forever, because the time, the moment, the day and what the goal brings to the Gambian people and for myself is just incredible,” Ceesay is quoted by The Point.

“I will never forget it for the rest of my life,” he added. “I have never felt like this since becoming a football player, it’s like this is the best moment of my life so far because the Gambian people showed me love, their prayers through my phone on social media everywhere and wherever I go I saw messages and people congratulating me and praying for me.

“I hope it will continue like this and I hope to continue scoring many goals for my country until the AFCON so we can continue to surprise.”

Ceesay has registered two goals and three assists from 24 appearances in the Swiss Super League thus far in 2020-21.
