Middlesbrough have announced that Rudy Gestede has left the club.

The Benin international is now a free agent after deciding not to sign a contract extension until July 20 to take part in the remaining games of the season. His contract was due to expire on June 30, but the club confirmed his departure on Saturday ahead of their 2-0 win over Stoke City in the English Championship.

Victory moved Boro up to 19th spot and above the Potters on the log standings.

Gestede joined Boro from Aston Villa for around £6 million in January 2017 and struggled to pen down a regular starting spot in his time at Riverside Stadium.

In total, the 31-year-old scored eight goals in 71 appearances for the club, the most recent of which came in a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest back in March.

Born in France, Gestede has made 10 international appearances for Benin.
