The 2018 World Cup matchday five saw the 1966 champions England register a convincing victory against a hapless Panama side.

England thumped Panama 6-1 at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium with Harry Kane grabbing a hat-trick for the Three Lions, who also scored through John Stones (brace) and Jesse Lingard. Patrick Baloy netted the Cana Men’s consolation goal which was also Panama’s first ever goal at the World Cup.

The victory took the European giants to the top of Group G standings with one match left which is against second-placed Belgium, who are only behind on goal-difference. Belgium and England have both booked their place in the Round of 16, while Central America side Panama and African giants Tunisia have both been eliminated from the competition.

The second game of the day featured Asian giants Japan and African side Senegal at the Yekaterinburg Stadium. Senegal’s Lions of Teranga took the lead twice through Sadio Mane and Moussa Wague as they drew 2-2 with the Samurai Blue of Japan, who scored through Takashi Inui and Keisuke Honda.

The draw left Japan and Senegal sitting at the top and second on the Group H standings respectively with one game left having both accumulated four points. Japan and Senegal will take on Poland, and Colombia respectively in their last games of the global tournament.

South American giants Colombia and Europe’s Poland locked horns at the Kazan Arena in the last game of the day. Yerry Mina, Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado were all on the scoresheet Colombia’s Coffee Growers recorded an impressive 3-0 win over the White and Reds of Poland.

The result saw Colombia move to third place on the Group H standings with one game left, while Poland are placed fourth on the table. The Coffee Growers kept their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 alive, while the White and Reds are eliminated from the tournament.
