On this day last year, goals from Lalaïna Nomenjanahary and Charles Andriamatsinoro guided Madagascar to surprise 2-0 win over Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Victory in Alexandria confirmed Barea as Group B winners and they’d reach the quarter-final stage of the tournament following victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Round of 16 before falling to defeat against Tunisia.

Despite the defeat, Nigeria would go onto reaching the final four following wins over defending champions Cameroon and South Africa before coming unstuck in the semi-finals against eventual winners Algeria.

And while the Super Eagles would end the tournament on a high with a 1-0 win over Tunisia in the third place play-off, many will remember the tournament for Madagascar’s giant-killing on Africa’s biggest stage.
