Nigerian goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has praised the Super Eagles for their efforts at the 2018 World Cup despite their exit from the tournament in the group stage.

The West African giants bowed out of the competition on Tuesday night when they suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Argentina, a result which saw them finish third on the Group D log.

Nigeria ultimately needed only a draw from the game against ‘La Albiceletse’ to advance, and they were on course to do exactly that when Victor Moses’ penalty early in the second half cancelled out Lionel Messi’s opener.

But defender Marcos Rojo struck the decisive goal in the 86th minute to see Argentina win 2-1 and advance into the next round alongside Group D winners Croatia. The South Americans’ reward is a clash with France on Saturday afternoon.

Ikeme, who was Nigeria’s honorary 24th member of the squad in respect to his battle against leukaemia, took to Twitter to express his pride in the team’s showing.

“We are all naturally disappointed, but I’m so proud of the team. The heart and effort shown was immense, in time our young team will learn from this and be stronger. But I’m proud,” he posted.

Ikeme has also revealed that he is in “complete remission” from the leukaemia after a year of intense chemotherapy treatment.
