Radovan Ćurčić has stepped down as head coach of Serbia after 18 months in charge.

The 44-year-old succeeded Dick Advocaat as head coach in November 2014, agreeing a contract until the end of the qualifying round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Ćurčić and the Football Association of Serbia (FSS) have now agreed to terminate that early.

“Unfortunately, after some bad results in [UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying], my staff have lost support and we decided to leave our posts,” Ćurčić explained. “Our main interest is to have a better Serbia in the future and I wish our players, the new head coach and supporters all the best. I believe Serbia will qualify for the World Cup.”

A new coach is expected to be appointed in the next few days. Serbia will play friendlies against Cyprus (25 May, Uzice), Israel (31 May, Novi Sad) and Russia (5 June, Monte Carlo) at the end of the season.
