Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock strikes to stop Tottenham going fourth as Newcastle grab deserved draw and improve survival hopes

On-loan Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock stopped Tottenham going into the top four as his late strike earned Newcastle a deserved 2-2 draw.

Spurs striker Harry Kane is now the joint-eighth top goalscorer in Premier League history after his brace put them 2-1 up over the Toon but Willock rocked them with a goal five minutes from time to improve the survival hopes of his current side.

It’s a vital point for the Magpies’ season and they will be buoyed by the spirit they showed at St James’ Park.

They did take the lead in the first half capitalising on poor Tottenham play with Joelinton netting.

But they were only able to stay ahead for 90 seconds as Kane decided to take matters into his own hands. Making himself the Premier League top goalscorer this campaign, while he remains the top assister too.

The four-minute double salvo looked like beating Steve Bruce’s side but a fine showing got a reward when Willock was found in the right place at the right time.

Newcastle could easily have led before they did too. A lovely ball into the box from Jonjo Shelvey found Dwight Gayle free of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga.

His header was smartly palmed away by Hugo Lloris, who has faced criticism at points this season. And the Frenchman recovered from his first stop quickly enough to deny Gayle again and not nudge the ball into his own net.

The pressure kept coming but on but before the half-hour mark an offside Carlos Vinicius scored, although it wasn’t a strike VAR needed to take a look at.

Spurs start was sloppy and series of defensive mishaps, including a botched clearance from Sanchez put Newcastle in on goal, with Joelinton eventually cracking the ball into the back of the net.

It was his fourth Premier League goal for the Magpies – two of them have now come against Spurs.

The Toon joy only lasted 90 minutes though and when Spurs get in trouble you can rely on one man to save them.

It wasn’t his most glamorous strike but Kane won’t mind one bit with Giovani Lo Celso’s overhit pass bouncing off a defender and landing back at the striker’s feet so he could fire home from close range.

And when he’s in the mood, he really is unstoppable. Just four minutes later and the game was flipped on its head.

This time it was Tanguy Ndombele receiving the ball between the lines and his pass set the England captain through on goal. Kane wasn’t messing about and thrashed it beyond Martin Dubravka.

Spurs’ defence remained weak though with slips and fouls littering their play.

Newcastle continued to make life difficult for the visitors with Jacob Murphy, who looked bright throughout, doing well on the right.

Joelinton nudged a tricky back-post chance wide for the Magpies as the game wore on, while at the other end it was Miguel Almiron saving the day, stopping a goal-bound Japhet Tanganga header.

Brazilian forward Joelinton then spurned another glorious chance and was almost immediately punished when Kane was set through on goal by Ndombele.

Kane then hit the post on a counter attack but Willock was able to capitalise on a lucky bounce to fire home with five minutes remaining and hand Newcastle a share of the spoils.
