There have been many strikers announcing themselves in the EFL Trophy but who will lead the scoring charts this term?

Here are the top goalscorers in the competition from the last five seasons…

2022/23

Tom Cannon (Everton U21) – 5

In 2022/23, Tom Cannon’s impressive performances in the EFL Trophy earned the 20-year-old his professional debut for Everton in the Carabao Cup and a loan switch to Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End.

The striker netted five goals in four outings for the Club’s Under-21s side as the Toffees topped Northern Group A, progressing to the Round of 16 before being knocked out of the competition.

Overall, Cannon registered eight goal contributions, chipping in with three assists, as the youngster grabbed a last gasp equaliser against Mansfield Town in the Round of 32 to help Everton to advance. After making the move to Deepdale, he scored eight goals in 21 league appearances for the Lilywhites.

2021/22

Cameron Archer (Aston Villa U21) – 6

Aston Villa youngster Cameron Archer made his mark on the EFL Trophy in 2021/22, on target six times in four appearances to be named the Group Stage Player of the Round.

The Walsall-born forward opened his account in the competition against Wycombe Wanderers before scoring a hat-trick against Burton Albion – his second of the season after netting a treble against Barrow in the Carabao Cup – and a brace against MK Dons. The Villains boasted a 100% record in Southern Group B before bowing out at the next hurdle.

Similarly to Cannon, the 21-year-old joined Preston on a temporary deal after catching the Lancashire Club’s eye in the competition, and a move to Middlesbrough followed last season.

2020/21

Charlie Wyke (Sunderland) & Harvey Saunders (Fleetwood Town) – 5

The prize was shared between Sunderland’s Charlie Wyke and Fleetwood Town’s Harvey Saunders in 2020/21 with the pair scoring five goals apiece to finish as the competition’s leading marksmen.

Wyke and the Black Cats lifted the trophy that term, edging Lincoln City 2-1 in the Final at Wembley, and it was the Club’s top scorer who netted what proved to be the decisive under the arch. Wyke rippled the net in the first half to level Saunders’ haul and win it for Sunderland.

Both Sunderland and Fleetwood were drawn in Northern Group A, where Saunders scored all five of his goals as the Cod Army topped the standings. The striker took home the match ball in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa Under-21s, before Fleetwood lost out in the Round of 16.

2019/20

Tristan Abrahams (Newport County) & Kevin van Veen (Scunthorpe United) – 5

Tallying five goals each, Newport County’s Tristan Abrahams and Scunthorpe United’s Kevin van Veen played a big part in their respective Clubs’ EFL Trophy runs in 2019/20. Newport got through to the Semi-Finals while Scunthorpe made it as far as the Quarter-Finals.

Abrahams netted a hat-trick in the Exiles’ 11-goal thriller against Cheltenham Town, running out 7-4 winners in Southern Group E where they finished as runners-up. He also found the net against West Ham United Under-21s in another high scoring affair and MK Dons.

Most notably, van Veen was at the double against the Iron’s local rivals Grimsby Town in Northern Group A to kick off the campaign and went on to score against Blackpool and Manchester City Under-21s to book Scunthorpe’s place in the final eight.

2018/19

Dom Telford (Bury) – 7

After signing for Bury from Stoke City in the summer, Dom Telford became synonymous with the EFL Trophy, scoring seven goals in as many games in the 2018/19 campaign to help the Shakers reach the Semi-Final.

Telford scored against Leicester City Under-21s and Fleetwood Town in Northern Group B. He bagged the match winner against Mansfield Town, while his goals helped to turn it around against Accrington Stanley, before beating Oxford United 5-2 to book Bury’s spot in the final four.

Just one game away from Wembley, Bury suffered defeat against League One opposition and eventual winners Portsmouth.
