The 2017/18 UEFA Champions League was the competition’s highest-scoring edition of all time in terms of goals per game.

Once the tally reached 381 for the season, the total passed the previous record set in 2016/17. In the end the final aggregate is 401 in 125 matches, around 3.21 per game, i.e. every 28 minutes. Last season ended with an average of 3.04 per game (30 minutes per goal), which was a record.

While this has been the most goal-heavy edition of the UEFA Champions League to date, it has not been the highest-scoring edition ever. A mighty 449 goals were netted in 2000/01, albeit at a slower rate (2.86 per game) because 157 matches were played in that season’s tournament which had two group stages.
