Former Slovakia coach Vladimír Weiss will guide Georgia in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying, after replacing Kakhaber Tskhadadze.

The 51-year-old’s first game will be against Kazakhstan on 29 March, with encounters with Slovakia, Romania and Spain to follow in late May and early June. “Every coach is proud to work for a national team as this is a responsibility, an honour and a pleasure at the same time,” said the former Artmedia and Slovan Bratislava boss. “I’m glad to be given a chance to return to European international football.

“Georgian football has a great history but great potential too,” he added. “Georgia were in pot six for the World Cup qualifying draw, which is not the level they should be at. I don’t want to make promises, but I’m sure we will make some progress here.”

Georgia will compete in qualifying Group D with Moldova, Serbia and UEFA EURO 2016 contenders Austria, Republic of Ireland and Wales.
