Lauren James marked her first start for England at the Women’s World Cup with a stunning goal against Denmark.

The Chelsea forward, whose brother is fellow Blues star Reece James, was a surprise omission from the starting XI for the underwhelming 1-0 victory over Haiti on Saturday.

Having forced her way into Sarina Wiegman’s first team, James showed why fans were calling for her inclusion with an outrageous strike.

The 21-year-old received the ball on the edge of the box, created a yard of space, and smashed a knuckle-ball into the side-netting.

Chelsea fans will know James is capable of magic and many were thrilled to see her talent showcased on the biggest stage.

One supporter on Twitter said: “Maybe people will be going up to Reece James and asking if he’s Lauren’s brother now.”

Another wrote: “Lauren James that is ridiculous.”

Meanwhile, ITV presenter Laura Woods tweeted: “Lauren James is just incredible. Coming of age tournament for her surely.”

James broke into the Chelsea Women’s first-team during the 2022/23 season as Emma Hayes’ side defended their WSL title.

The academy graduate, who had spells at Arsenal and Manchester United before returning to Chelsea in 2021, scored five goals and made her Lionesses debut in September 2022.

James was introduced in the 61st minute of England’s 1-0 victory over Haiti in their Women’s World Cup opener and lifted an under-performing side.

She was rewarded with a starting place against Denmark – and did not disappoint.
