Martin Odegaard plays football with Norwegian Royal Family and Arsenal star ends up on losing team
Martin Odegaard has been spending his time away from Arsenal playing football with the Norwegian Royal Family.
But any chance of putting a sad end to the season with the Gunners behind him was wiped away as the Royals lost.
The charity football match takes place annually at Skaugum estate, residence of the crown prince Haakon and his wife crown princess Matte-Marit.
Odegaard was playing on the royal and celebrity team along with his girlfriend and professional dancer Helene Spilling.
They were joined by Women’s Super League stars Maren Mjelde of Chelsea and Guro Bergsvand of Brighton, as well as former Middlesbrough and Sheffield United striker Jan Age Fjortoft.
The royal team eventually lost the charity match 7-6 to Bon Unified, a disability team from the Eidsvoll municipality.
Speaking after the game, Odegaard said: “We gave everything, but they made it difficult for us.
“It’s a very nice thing, we’ve been here once before. Football is for everyone. It was fun with everyone here, I appreciated that.
“It was fun. They delivered and had some goals and good contributions, so it was fun.”
Discussing the performance of his girlfriend, the Arsenal captain added: “She can work a bit with throw-ins, but beyond that there was a lot of will and she gave everything she could.”
Spilling said: “We actually had a plan for him to dribble all together, but it doesn’t work when the girlfriend, i.e. me, is so bad.
“He’s actually quite good on the dance floor, we’ve tried to dance a bit! I think I’m more impressed with him on the dancefloor than I am with myself here today.”
The game took place a day after Norway got their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign back on track with a 3-1 win over Cyprus.
Erling Haaland scored twice in that game to help the nation recover from a 2-1 defeat to Scotland in their previous match.
