Aaron Mooy was in the running for August’s Player of the Month award, and his fine start to the season continued with a fantastic strike to settle matters at Elland Road.

Newcastle moved up to second with their fourth straight league win, defeating Derby 2-0 on the road, while Barnsley are right behind them after picking up a 2-1 win at Preston North End, courtesy of Magpies loanee Adam Armstrong’s brilliant late goal.

There were further away wins for Birmingham City and Brentford, who defeated Fulham and Brighton respectively. Norwich overcame Cardiff in a five-goal thriller at Carrow Road, and Sheffield Wednesday also hauled in maximum points courtesy of a 2-1 win over Wigan.

Elsewhere, Bristol City fought back from two goals down to rescue a point at Rotherham, and there was drama too at Molineux, where Burton salvaged a point thanks to Will Miller’s late equaliser. QPR and Blackburn also shared the spoils, while Reading were victors against Ipswich on Friday night.

On Sunday, Nottingham Forest took a point from Villa Park after an 87th-minute Henri Lansbury goal. The home side went 1-0 down to an Apostolos Vellios goal, but Ross McCormack and substitute Rudy Gestede got two goals in as many minutes to put the Villans in front. Lansbury’s goal made it 2-2 at full-time.
